IETF has presented a new standard for device configuration intended to support advanced network wide configuration changes among other things. The new protocol comes with a data modeling language called YANG. The two in combination opens up a new range of possibilities and removes much of the pain previously associated with automated device configuration.

Providing an introduction to the NETCONF protocol and the YANG modeling language and discussing how transactional configuration changes are supported, how guardrails can be achieved and how configuration validation can be performed before applying a new set of configurations.

Network Automation: History, Market, and Current Challenges
The increasingly stringent demands on network operations with regards to operations speed, flexibility, and adaptation to change, plus the ever-present need to constantly reduce costs has recently required innovation to a new stage, application synchronization and rapid configuration via software tools that externally synchronize the software systems' data and harmonize the configuration of the software systems themselves.

- Discussing examples of these in the current marketplace, some of which are gaining wide   acceptance, and some of which are still in the evangelistic stages.
- Presenting the results of research from Analysys Mason on the current and forecasted markets   for network automation software and services.

      SESSION I DEVICE LEVEL AUTOMATION
11.00   The Rise of Embedded Automation Systems
Routers start to share information on twitter, switches exchange state information via customized semaphores, formerly manual operational tasks evolve into embedded automation inside the network and entire remote networks reconfigure themselves based on contextual information.

- What does this mean for engineering and operating of networks? Where is the industry heading?
- Discussing a combination of theory and practical examples to analyze the motivations behind
the rise of embedded automation systems.

Bruno Klauser, Consulting Engineer European Markets, Cisco

11.30   Reducing Opex with on-Device Automation
Making the case for on-device automation capabilities. The availability of sophisticated, centralized GUI-based management tools does not change the fact that many network operators like to have direct command line access to a network element. This is especially true for advanced troubleshooting needs.

- Explaining why the commands and their resulting output available on network elements have
to cover all possible deployments in which these elements are used.
- Showing how operational scripts can alleviate that problem by allowing operators to fine tune
  the output of individual commands.

Bruno De Troch, Juniper Networks

12.00   How to Synchronize Distant Nodes' Embedded Scripts using IP Route Watch
      Semaphore Concept to Achieve rRdundancy
Explaining how embedded scripts can implement a true networking protocol to solve the problematic of Data-Center Interconnect (DCI) that requires node redundancy for VLAN extension, with a focus on VPLS redundancy.

- Demonstrating how to synchronize using route watch semaphores, several scripts dispatched   over distant nodes.
- Analyzing real large scale deployments where redundancy is managed with scripting.
- Demonstrating that scripting is not a 'work-around', neither is just limited to management   automation.

  INTRODUCING NTAF

NTAF, or the Network Test Automation Forum, is an emerging body whose charter is to create specifications for the automation of network test equipment such as traffic generators, protocol emulators, impairment generators, layer one switches, as well as associated software tools for test case authoring, scheduling, and reporting.  Initial representation for NTAF consists of 11 companies including some of the world’s largest service providers (including BT & Verizon), network equipment  manufacturers (including Cisco and Ericsson), and test equipment vendors.  NTAF technical specifications will establish requirements for device discovery, network topology specification, test case definition, results formatting, and other technical obstacles that will ultimately ease the challenges associated with assembling a test lab consisting of equipment from multiple vendors.

Participants from service providers, network equipment manufacturers, test equipment vendors.
